Installing, and configuring QuickBooks Enterprise ODBC Driver

When you’re into running a business, it’s tough to keep yourself off from QuickBooks software solutions.
In QuickBooks, you have a separate company file to work and manage all databases. However, you may need to transfer data from your QuickBooks company file to a third-party application like Microsoft Excel, Access, Crystal Reports, etc. This is where the ODBC driver comes into the scene. It allows you to export data from the QuickBooks company file to different programs. Get in touch with the QuickBooks Enterprise Technical Support team to know whether your edition supports ODBC drivers.

What is ODBC Driver?

ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) is an open standard application programming interface (API) that allows applications to access data stored in a database, regardless of the database management system (DBMS). It was created by Microsoft and the SQL Access Group in 1992 to provide a standard way for applications to interact with various databases using SQL.

ODBC consists of four primary components:

  1. Application: End-user program that utilizes ODBC functions to execute SQL statements.
  2. Driver Manager: Loads the right drivers for each application and database.
  3. Driver: Handles ODBC process calls and submits SQL requests to the data source.
  4. Data Source: The database being accessed and its DBMS.

Benefits of ODBC

ODBC offers several advantages for both application developers and database users.

  • Interoperability: Applications can access data from different DBMS through a single interface, making them independent of the underlying database.
  • Ease of use: Users can access database files without learning SQL or the specific interface of each DBMS.
  • Performance: ODBC is specifically designed as a low-level, high-performance interface for relational data stores.
  • Flexibility: The application can be extended to support new databases by adding the corresponding ODBC driver.
